Leung Ping-kwan (Yesi)

Leung Ping-kwan, MH (12 March 1949 – 1 May 2013) whose pen name was Yesi, was a Hong Kong poet, novelist, essayist, translator, teacher, and scholar. He has also been an important cultural figure of Hong Kong.
== Life ==
Yesi was born in Xinhui District in Guangdong during 1949. Yet, in the same year, his family settled in Hong Kong. As a result, he was raised in Hong Kong. Unfortunately, Yesi losted his father at the age of four. He began writing in the 1960s and quickly became known as the translator of foreign-language literatures and for his editorial work on a number of literary publications targeted at young Chinese readers in both Hong Kong and Taiwan.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Cha: An Asian Literary Journal - Leung Ping-kwan )
After graduating from the Hong Kong Baptist University with a bachelor's degree in English, Yesi got his job first as a secondary school teacher, then the editor of South China Morning Post (SCMP). In the year of 1978, he went to America for further studies. Then, during 1984, Yesi got his PhD degree in comparative literature at the University of California, San Diego. His PhD thesis was "Aesthetics of opposition : a study of the modernist generation of Chinese poets, 1936-1949".
Yesi returned to Hong Kong afterwards. He taught at the Department of English Studies and Comparative Literature at the University of Hong Kong. From 1998 onwards, he got a place as a professor to give lectures on comparative literature in the Chinese Department at Lingnan University. Later on, he also picked up the job as the director of the Research Institute for the Humanities.〔http://www.cuhk.edu.hk/rih/index.htm〕 He specialized in teaching literature and film, comparative literature, Hong Kong literature, modern literary criticism, and Chinese literature writing.
Yesi has achievements across many areas in literature, including poem, prose, novel, drama, literary criticism, and cultural criticism.
Yesi writes his works mostly in Chinese. However, his English works were also published in the Hong Kong magazine, ''Muse''.
In 2010, Yesi admitted publicly that he was diagnosed lung cancer. He passed away on 5 January 2013.
